(Answer) (Category) PRW.NET FAQ's : (Category) ISDN :
Will a BRI give me the the functionality of two phone lines ?
For many practical purposes, yes. The two "B" channels on a BRI can intermix voice (analog) and data (digital) calls. You can make voice calls to any regular phone, e.g. ISDN is not required on the other side. Some possible uses for a BRI are:
  • Two internet connections for 128 Kbps throughput
  • One 64 Kbps internet connection and a fax connection
  • One 64 Kbps internet connection and a phone connection
Voice connections require ISDN equipment with analog ports. Using both channels for voice requires ISDN telephone equipment. If you use an ISDN line for analog calls be aware that (unlike analog lines) power will be required to use ISDN equipment.
Alternatives such as a UPS should be considered to be able to make calls in the event of a power outage.
